Growing older brings with it both challenges and opportunities. For many, it is an opportunity to enjoy more time with family and friends, to travel or to pursue hobbies and interests.Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle often involves a move from the family home to more manageable accommodation. For many older people, an Independent Living Unit (ILU) is an ideal choice, providing a selection of living options, access to community facilities at an adjacent aged care home and a secure environment, without the burden of home maintenance.
Southern Cross Care (Vic) offers ILU co-located with our residential aged care home in Shepparton. Co-location may provide an ideal arrangement for partners who wish to live close to each other when one requires a greater level of care. ILU residents can enjoy meals and activities at the residential aged care home, while maintaining their independence.
SCC (Vic) also manages the St Margaret’s Community Retirement Village at Keon Park, which offers 19 two-bedroom and four one-bedroom ILUs. This will be co-located with a new 96-place aged care home that will open in 2013.
All of our units have 24-hour emergency alert systems, kitchen, garage, courtyard/garden, access to health care and other benefits that are purpose-built and the needs of older people in mind. Staff at each site get to know the residents and look out for their health or other changes that may indicate a greater level of support is required.
ILU residents can also enjoy the additional support offered by SCC (Vic)’s Community Services Care Packages and in home care, which provide a range of flexible and responsive in-home care and support services.
SCC (Vic)’s ILUs are based on an ‘occupancy lease’ or ‘lifetime lease’ arrangement. The cost of the ingoing contribution and other fees varies depending on location, facilities and services. We will work closely with you to determine what type of living arrangement suits you best.
